The mysterious portraits of Belgian painter Eddy Stevens are filled with stirring symbols that invite the viewer to unpack their meanings. Though his work has a certain timeless quality that recalls 16th- and 17th-century painters, his work is also filled with contemporary flourishes and progressive approaches to the craft.

With seemingly endless headlines about corruption, violence, environmental disasters and more, illustrator Mauro Gatti has created a salve for these dark times. His ongoing project The Happy Broadcast shines a light on the good happening in the world. The popular Instagram account features colorful illustrations that share a positive headline and a corresponding news story in the caption. Gatti created The Happy Broadcast as a way to deal with his “social anxiety caused by the constant stream of negative news.” Now almost two years old, the project has evolved and become a place where people engage with one another. “I think that the community around The Happy Broadcast has grown into something more than an audience that only drops a ‘like’ on an image and moves on,” Gatti tells My Modern Met. “This community is engaged in constructive discussions and love to share the little moments of happiness that they encounter during their day.” Producing encouraging artwork has been transformative for Gatti’s own mental health. “Being able to balance the fear-mongering and click-baiting headlines with some positivity and hope in the people of this world is key to a more optimistic life,” he explains. “I’m just grateful I started this little project and I look forward to its evolution. I’m currently working on an app and a book that will be released in 2020.” Celebrate the good news from 2019 and follow The Happy Broadcast on Instagram to put a smile on your face next year. Not only do they get in the way of daily activities Because of their bulkiness, but they’re also itchy and become smelly when worn for long periods of time. Fortunately, Chicago-based startup Cast21 has come up with a more hygienic, lightweight, and breathable alternative to the traditional plaster cast that will drastically improve the life of anyone with a broken limb. The Cast21 team is made up of a trio of engineers from the University of Illinois—Jason Troutner, electrical engineer Justin Brooks, and biomedical design engineer Ashley Moy. Together they designed an elegant, wide-mesh cast that can be fitted in around 10 minutes. The sleeve painlessly slips over a person’s hand and onto their arm. It’s then filled with a patented liquid resin that becomes a malleable gel after around 3 minutes. The doctor can then adjust the gel to perfectly hug the broken bone, giving it the support it needs to move back into place. The best part? As the resin hardens, it produces an exothermic reaction, providing soothing heat to the injured area. “The majority of fractures happen in children, adolescents and the elderly. Those saws are very loud and all this debris flies off and it’s very messy, it can be extremely frightening. The cast saw also presents a risk of burns to the patient,” says Cast21’s VP of engineering Veronica Hogg. “Our product does not require that at all. It’s designed so that a physician can take clinical shears, snip through the tabs, and pull it open easily. It was designed to completely eliminate the use of a cast saw and make the healing process far more pleasant for the patient.” The criss-crossed, breathable design allows wearers to satisfy an itch, and the waterproof material means you can even shower and swim while wearing one. Patients can also choose between gel colors, that can be combined to create artistic gradients. And if it gets dirty, it’s easy to wipe off stains with water. This innovative product certainly beats the ugly plaster cast, and it can even be signed by your friends and family too! Cast21’s cast isn’t available to the public yet, and, as of now, the company only has a forearm model designed in a medium size. However, the engineers plan to create casts for all parts of the body. “The idea is to prove that this technology works right now, we are past the prototype stage and have a fully functioning model in place for the forearm,” says Hogg. “We hope this technology can span across the entire body. We are looking forward to having a lower limb model for ankle fractures soon.” As for cost, Cast21 is aiming to make its product accessible to as many people as possible. “We want it to be competitive, and reachable to a large population. We don’t want this to be a luxury product,” says Hogg. “We are still conducting research in price sensitivity, and the final cost to the patients will be depending on their insurance and doctor.” Find out more about this cast on the Cast21 website. Her rise as a global climate activist had humble beginnings, as she protested alone outside of the Swedish Parliament, and has culminated with her being named TIME 2019 Person of the Year. As the youngest person to ever win the honor, Thunberg is continuing her work in breaking barriers. Not only is she a teenager taking on some of the world’s top politicians, but she’s also showing the world that her Asperger’s syndrome doesn’t hold her back from doing important work. Thunberg is coming off a remarkable few months, which saw her give a fiery speech at the United Nations’ Climate Action Summit. Her words quickly went viral, as she took governments to task for not being an active part in protecting the environment. With her words having such a global impact, it’s hard to believe that it was just August 2018 when Thunberg began her School Strike for Climate all alone in an effort to pressure Sweden to adhere to the Paris Agreement. Now, with an army of supporters, she’s become a face for change. Her success has also made her vulnerable to attack from those who feel that a teenager has no place in this type of activism. But for Thunberg, her future is worth fighting for. “We can’t just continue living as if there was no tomorrow, because there is a tomorrow,” she tells TIME. Part of Thunberg’s success is certainly due to her ability to plainly state scientific facts, cutting through technical jargon to make climate change information accessible to everyone. Fearless and unabashed in her beliefs, it’s her strength of conviction that makes her appear wise beyond her years. “She is an ordinary teenage girl who, in summoning the courage to speak truth to power, became the icon of a generation,” TIME writes. “By clarifying an abstract danger with piercing outrage, Thunberg became the most compelling voice on the most important issue facing the planet.” Now she’s motivating other young people to stand up for their beliefs and make their voices heard. And while Thunberg faces increased scrutiny, she’s up for the challenge. ; “I have to think carefully about everything I do, everything I say, what I’m wearing even, what I’m eating—everything!” she told TIME. “Everything I say will reach other people, so I need to think two steps ahead. I think that it’s a good sign actually because that shows we are actually making a difference and they see us as a threat.” Read more about Greta Thunberg and her selection as TIME 2019 Person of the Year online or pick up a copy on newsstands now.Related Articles:Leonardo DiCaprio Calls Climate Change Activist Greta Thunberg “A Leader of Our Time” Photographer Immortalizes Greta Thunberg in Powerful Wet Plate Portraits 25+ Creative Protest Signs From the Global Youth-Led Climate Change Strike Comparing Greta Thunberg’s First Climate Strike with Mass Demonstrations One Year Later The post Greta Thunberg Is Named TIME’s Person of the Year 2019 appeared first on My Modern Met. via RSSUnify feed https://mymodernmet.com/greta-thunberg-time-person-of-the-year-2019/ Part of the fun of gift-giving is the surprise for the recipient, but sometimes boxes can reveal your present before they even look inside. Luckily, Prank-o has created a solution to this dilemma with its selection of hilarious gift boxes that’ll hide your present while looking like you’re giving them a totally different product. The products Prank-o depicts are the kind of thing you’d find on late-night infomercials. They’re silly but plausible enough to exist. Aptly called Historic Photographer of the Year Awards, the competition showcases the best images of historical and cultural sites from around the world. The winning and shortlisted photos highlight an array of places. From UNESCO sites to relics of wars to breathtaking interior spaces, the results are a beautiful way to reflect on the past and consider how it intersects with the present. Now in its third year, the Historic Photographer of the Year Awards named one overall winner as well as winners in two categories: Historic England and History Short Filmmaker. The rest of the highly regarded entries are shortlisted. So, who took home the top prize this year? Stéphane Hurel was given this honor for his haunting portrait of Arromanches Mulberry Harbor in Normandy, France. These temporary, portable harbors were created by the U.K. during World War II to make it quicker to deliver cargo during the Allied invasion of Normandy in 1944. Of the winning entry, judge Dan Korn remarked, “The wonderful use of light, perspective, and composition to produce an image which conveys the futility and yet—in the case of World War II in particular—the necessity of war, to defeat the forces of tyranny and oppression, made this stand out from the other wonderful entries.” The Historic Photographer of the Year Awards was created by Trip Historic, an online travel guide to the world’s historic sites. They awarded Hurel a cash prize of £400, and the category winners each won a “unique money-can’t-buy experience.” Scroll down to see some of the incredible shortlisted winners and then check out the rest of the photos here. One dad in particular recently had his fun online, when he took over his 15-year-old daughter’s social media accounts for an entire 2 weeks. Madelynn Sumpter was caught trying to “sneak boys into a sleep-over,” so her parents offered her a choice of punishment: one month without her phone, or 2 weeks without it but her parents would get full control of her social media accounts. The gutsy teen chose the latter, but she had no idea how far her dad would go with his new-found power. The parental takeover officially began on November 11th, with Madelynn’s dad starting the online shenanigans with an Instagram post to explain the situation. He warns, “Be on the look out for some amazing Instagram posts, snap chats and Tiktoks from her parents!!” He wasn’t bluffing—the next post was a hilarious Instagram selfie of the man himself with a “Felt cute. Might delete later” caption. Next came more amusing photos of Madelynn’s dad posing in wigs and different outfits. In one post, the funny father even gives viewers advice and tips for running. But the takeover expanded beyond Instagram and onto TikTok, where Madelynn’s dad posted his best work yet. A ream of silly videos show him—and other friends and family members—dancing and lip syncing to a number of different tracks. Now that the takeover has ended, Madelynn can rest well knowing that she has her phone back. She announced her return with a cute throwback picture of her as a toddler with the caption, “I’m back sweeter than ever and ready to make good choices.” Although the whole ordeal was likely total torture for the teenager, she also has her father to thank. Since the 2 week takeover, her Instagram following increased from 3,000 to over 15,000! Many fans are even asking her to “bring dad back.” Check out some of the hilarious posts from Madelynn’s dad below and find more on Madelynn’s Instagram and TikTok accounts. 15-year-old Madelynn Sumpter was caught trying to “sneak boys into a sleep-over,” so her dad took over her social media accounts for 2 weeks as punishment.

In California, the Claremont United Methodist Church has set up a non-traditional scene that speaks to a timely topic—the treatment of refugees. Instead of uniting together under one roof, Mary, Joseph, and the baby Jesus are held separately in cage-like cells as a commentary on how refugee families are often treated by the United States government. The image was shared on Facebook by Senior Minister Karen Clark Ristine along with the theological statement that accompanies the nativity. It reads, in part, “In a time in our country when refugee families seek asylum at our borders and are unwillingly separated from one another, we consider the most well-known refugee family in the world. Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, the Holy Family. Shortly after the birth of Jesus, Joseph and Mary were forced to flee with their young son from Nazareth to Egypt to escape King Herod, a tyrant. They feared persecution and death. What if this family sought refuge in our country today?” What follows is a reminder of Jesus’ teachings as written in the gospel of Matthew, where he opens his arms to all walks of life: “I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me.” The nativity scene is just one further extension of the work the church is already doing, as it regularly holds free immigration assistance and citizenship workshops. They’ve also raised over $100,000 to assist with the legal representation of separated families. The powerful scene is a reminder by the church that over the past three years, over 5,500 children under the age of 2 have been separated from their parents at the U.S. border. This controversial action, when transposed on the Holy Family, makes for a particularly powerful statement and is a call for compassion to Christians around the world. Luckily, in the church’s world, there is a happy ending. Once inside the church, the Holy Family has been reunited. One can only hope that many of the separated refugee families also have this same opportunity. h/t: [Mashable] Related Articles:14 Artists React to Refugee Ban with Compassionate Illustrations Interview: Inspiring Woman Spreads Joy By Giving Soccer Balls to Children in Refugee Camps Powerful Portraits of the “Invisible Children” Growing Up as Refugees Street Artist JR Installs Massive Face of a Child on Mexican Side of US Border Wall The post Church Displays Nativity Scene with Holy Family Separated in Cages at the Border appeared first on My Modern Met. via RSSUnify feed https://mymodernmet.com/refugee-nativity-scene/ |
