In your quest to draw realistic portraits, it’s important that you know how to sketch all aspects of a face. From the eyes to the lips to the nose, each element is important in accurately portraying your subject. Of all the facial features, the nose is one you might not give a lot of thought. But don’t ignore it—this feature helps define the face. Think back to all the times you’ve remembered someone because of their schnoz. That alone is reason enough for why you should learn how to draw a nose. Drawing a nose is a great artistic exercise. This particular body part is simple to sketch, but it has distinctive qualities that can make it a challenge to get just right. In this tutorial, you’ll learn the parts of a nose as well as what to look for when drawing it. ; Anatomy of a NoseBefore you get started drawing, it’s always helpful to understand the anatomy of what you’ll be sketching. That way, you’ll have a better comprehension of how something moves (or doesn’t move), and you’ll be sure to manipulate it in ways that make sense for its form. For drawing the human body, this means you’ll want to learn how to sketch bones, including the skull. (Depicting a skull is a great exercise and one that is commonly used in drawing classes.) You only need to know a few essential parts of the nose to have an understanding of its form. ;There is the nasal bone that is near the top of your nose—in fact, the “root” of the nose is between your eyebrows. From the root, the dorsum (or “bridge”) leads down to the tip of the nose to the nostrils on either side. It’s here that you’ll want to observe the individual features of the nose. It’s not a complicated body part (especially when compared to the hands or eyes), but there are some things to note before you begin a drawing. Ask yourself:
; How to Draw a Nose Step by StepMake sure you grab your ;essential art supplies. For this exercise, you’ll want to have at least a few pencils ;of varying graphite tones, a ;vinyl eraser, and a ;sketchpad. ; Step 1: Break the nose down into its most basic shapes.Once you’ve familiarized yourself with the anatomy of a nose, take a look at the source material of the schnoz you’d like to draw. For this lesson, it is beneficial to sketch several noses to really appreciate just how different this body part can be. Based on what you know about its features—including the bridge, tip, and nostrils—break them down into basic shapes. Using an HB pencil, you’ll draw a long oval for the bridge and smaller circles for the tip of the nose as well as nostrils. (These elements will overlap, and that’s okay.) While you’re just getting into the basics of how the nose is shaped, make sure you pay attention to the width of its features. ; Next: How to draw a nose. ;The post Learn How to Draw Any Type of Human Nose With a Few Simple Steps appeared first on My Modern Met. via RSSUnify feed https://mymodernmet.com/how-to-draw-a-nose/

Deep in the forest of West Sumatra, a strange parasitic flower bloomed just as the year came to an end. Measuring in at nearly 44 inches in diameter, this giant Rafflesia tuan-mudae is the largest bloom ever recorded. Also known as a corpse flower, it ;is one of 28 species in the Rafflesia genus. Its nickname comes from the incredible stench the plant gives off as it blooms. Found throughout Southeast Asia, ;Rafflesia are most common to Borneo and Sumatra. In fact, the record-breaking Rafflesia ;was recorded in the Maninjau Natural Reserve in West Sumatra. Interestingly, these flowers have no roots or leaves. They are parasites living off their hosts, which happen to be vines from the Tetrastigma ;genus. (In fact, this exceptionally large Rafflesia uses the exact same host as the previous record holder. That bloom, which measured about 42 inches, was recorded in 2017.) The parasitic plants embed themselves into the tissue of the vines and feed off of their water and nutrients. Unlike other types of Rafflesia, which can bloom in vines hanging from the air, the ;R. tuan-mudae ;sticks to the ground, making its presence known only when its petals unfurl. “Rafflesias attach to the body of another, and grow at the expense of that plant,” explains biologist Ross Koning, who manages the greenhouse at Eastern Connecticut State University. “They can’t flower until they’ve gotten enough energy from the host, so these plants flower very rarely, and you have to hunt them.” While a Rafflesia ;in bloom is a sight to see, it comes with an unfortunate consequence—the foul odor. This rotting meat smell is meant to attract flies—their main pollinators. This is particularly important as these plants don’t bloom often and, when they do, the flower only lasts for one week before dying off. Given the unfavorable odor it emits, it makes sense that this bloom is referred to as a corpse flower. However, Rafflesia ;isn’t the only flower to be called a corpse. Though they are only distantly related, the more commonly known corpse flower is the Amorphophallus titanum. ;These enormous plants only grow in the wild in Sumatra but can be found in botanical gardens around the world. While also giving off the smell of rotting flesh when in bloom, ;A. titanum is much easier to cultivate as it only requires a pot with adequate space to grow. So if you ever stumble upon either of these plants and are feeling adventurous, you can take a whiff… but be forewarned, it’s not for the faint of heart. The ;Rafflesia ;is a parasitic flower found in Southeast Asia that gives off an awful stench when it blooms. This has earned it the nickname of “corpse flower.”One recent bloom was measured at nearly 4 feet in diameter, making it the world’s largest recorded flower.Another type of corpse flower, Amorphophallus titanum, ;can be found in botanical gardens around the world.h/t: [Atlas Obscura, CNN] Related Articles:This Strange Plant Has Flowers with Petals Shaped Like Hummingbirds Wondrous World of Flowers That Look Like Something Completely Different “Skeleton Flowers” Turn Beautifully Transparent in the Rain Adorable Succulents’ Leaves Look Like Tiny Dolphins Jumping in the Air The post This Giant “Corpse” Flower Found in Indonesia Is the World’s Largest Bloom appeared first on My Modern Met. via RSSUnify feed https://mymodernmet.com/rafflesia-corpse-flower/ If you love to cook as much as Monica Geller does, then you’ll want to add a Friends-themed slow cooker to your collection of kitchen gadgets. Not only will all of their animations be streaming by spring of this year, but the film studio announced that it is currently working on two new movies. They made their declaration during their annual New Year’s statement in which they spoke of their recent accomplishments and wished the people of Japan well—particularly those who have been affected by the torrential rain and typhoons. The renowned animation studio has been tight-lipped about the two films, although they have divulged some information about one of their upcoming releases. We know it is being directed by the iconic Ghibli co-founder Hayao Miyazaki and has been in development over the last couple of years. (Miyazaki famously came out of retirement in 2016.) The feature is called Kimi-tachi wa Dō Ikiru ka (How Do You Live?) and it’s a coming-of-age fantasy story that follows 15-year-old Koperu and his uncle. Kimi-tachi wa Dō Ikiru ka was originally slated for completion in time for the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. But with the production moving slower than expected (currently, the film is only about 15% complete), producer Toshio Suzuki is now projecting that it will be released in 2021 or 2022. Hopefully, it’ll be in time for the 2022 opening of the Studio Ghibli Theme Park in Nagakute City! After mastering Photoshop, he let his creativity take over and has become a well-regarded digital artist with a large following on Instagram. From cityscapes that seem ripped from ;Inception ;to surreal compositions combining people and nature, his photo manipulations are expertly blended and full of detail. Initially, Ramsauer was inspired by the images he saw on Unsplash and Instagram. This led to experimentation and an addiction to creating unique compositions from the imagery he collects. In fact, while he sometimes has a specific idea in mind and seeks out photographs to fulfill that idea, more often than not his imagination leads him to a different result. “I love to look at photos and imagine what I could do with them,” he tells My Modern Met. Ramsauer’s work seems particularly driven by two contrasting forces—the urban landscape and nature. In some images, bustling city streets are dropped into puddles. In other cases, a suspended bridge leads right into the side of a mountain. And, when humans are present, they either dominate the frame or are dwarfed by their environment. It’s these contrasts that make his digital manipulations visually striking. In a way, Ramsauer’s work is an extension of Surrealism, where the unconscious mind was responsible for creation. Similarly, as the Swiss artist flips through photographs, he lets himself be led by where his creativity takes him, leaving himself open to any end result. This makes his process varied. At times, an edit can take less than an hour and become his favorite. In other instances, he can labor for hours or days and come away with nothing—it’s all part of his creative flow. This openness to going where the work takes him is perhaps owed to his personal philosophy that perspective is everything. “When you have a negative perspective on something, you can’t probably change the ‘something’ but you can question your negative perspective,” he tells My Modern Met. “The perspective is always part of the problem and will always be part of the solution. That’s why I like to play with perspectives in my work.” If you like what you see, Ramsauer has prints, t-shirts, and much more available at Redbubble. His creatures, which range from ferocious dinosaurs to snakes and skeletons, seem to emerge from two-dimensional surfaces to take over their environment. The work is made that much better by the whimsical photographs that Scaf takes of each piece. In order to highlight his graffiti in the best way possible, Scaf actually interacts with his art. Whether it’s dressing as a caveman to sit next to a dinosaur skeleton or feeding a rat a giant piece of cheese, his presence in the images is a spectacular finishing touch. His sense of humor is deeply connected with his art, as he hopes that through his work people will get in touch with their inner child and be transported to a different world. On a technical level, Scaf’s work is precise. His understanding of angles and perspective allows him to create 3D illusions from flat surfaces with ease. Always pushing himself to new levels, Scaf is constantly thinking of new subjects and scenarios to paint in order to delight the viewer. His success as an artist has also led him to start his own company, Grafo Deco, where he offers his services to private clients and businesses.
