After almost 14 years of being employed full-time with one company, the COVID-19 pandemic threw a few curveballs that forced me to pursue the path of self-employment and developing websites. The band itself even referred to the website as being “infuriatingly uninformative and unpredictable.” But not anymore! Radiohead.com has been reimagined as the “Radiohead Public Library” where anyone can access an online archive of the band’s back catalog in one convenient place. If you’re a fan of the iconic English group, you’re sure to appreciate the website update. Not only can you find links to stream their most popular tunes via Spotify and Apple Music, but you can also watch their music videos, live performances, and order previously out-of-print merchandise. The site is also great for discovering some of Radiohead’s lesser-known recordings. They list music predating their debut studio album Pablo Honey as well as their first EP called Drill. (At this time, you cannot stream the older, rarer music.) Like any library, the Radiohead Public Library offers you the opportunity to be a card-carrying member of their “institution.” Simply click the ID icon at the top of the screen and it will generate a unique card number for you. Then, upload your picture, click download, and stick it in your wallet. In the past, Radiohead fans might’ve felt like the band’s website left much to be desired. The iconic English group agreed.

In addition to food packaging, cosmetic and toiletry products are some of the many items that are filling up landfills and polluting oceans. That’s why Berlin-based product designer Jonna Breitenhuber decided to come up with a zero waste alternative to plastic bottles. She created SOAPBOTTLE—packaging made from soap. The simple, colorful soap forms are made from natural ingredients and hold liquid such as shampoo and shower gel. However, you won’t need to bring these containers to the trash when they’re empty. Users simply cut the corner of the soap bottles using the integrated, reusable metal closure, and pour the product out. Once the content is used up, the soap packaging itself can be used as hand soap or processed into detergents. It gradually dissolves over time, leaving no waste behind. Find out more about SOAPBOTTLE on Breitenhuber’s website and scroll down to watch a video of this clever product in action. Plagued by mental illness, he had periods of great suffering, which eventually led him to sever part of his left ear. Aside from famous works like ;Starry Night ;and his ;Sunflowers series, he is also known for the 35 self-portraits he created. Now, experts have confirmed an additional self-portrait and, interestingly, it’s the only one he ever painted during a bout of psychosis. Self-Portrait (1889) ;was purchased by Norway’s National Museum in 1910 as an original Van Gogh, but questions about its authenticity were brought up in the 1970s. Critics pointed to what they felt were unusual color choices, as well as the decision to flatten brush strokes with a palette knife, as anomalous for the great painter. To put the issue to rest, the museum called on experts from Amsterdam’s Van Gogh Museum in 2014 to study the work closely and make a final determination. According to those experts, Self-Portrait (1889) ;is most certainly by Van Gogh. Researcher Louis van Tilborgh from the Van Gogh Museum presented the findings of the team’s technical and stylistic analysis, stating that there was no doubt that the work is by the master of Post-Impressionism. According to Van Tilborgh, it’s the “only work Van Gogh is known to have painted while suffering from psychosis.” Soon to be published in The Burlington Magazine, the team’s extensive research covered the painting’s provenance (owner history), a technical look at the canvas and color swatches, as well as a comparative analysis of the painting’s style and composition. Van Gogh’s gaunt face and tired eyes certainly show his mental state. In a September 20, 1889 letter to his brother Theo, Van Gogh mentions painting a self-portrait as “an attempt from when I was ill.” Researchers believe he was referring to this painting, as the type of canvas, brushwork, and color palette are all in keeping with other paintings created between late summer and autumn 1889. Van Tilborgh even points to Van Gogh’s vulnerable gaze as evidence of his mental state, stating that this shy, sideways glance “is often found in patients suffering from depression and psychosis.” In July of that year, he’d been admitted to an asylum after he tried to swallow paint. That August, once he was well enough to write his brother, he requested that he be provided paints. Van Tilborgh believes he would have painted Self-Portrait (1889) ;just a few days later. Interestingly, the date of this painting places it about eight months after the painter had mutilated his ear. In the oil painting, his ear appears to be partially missing, but it’s important to remember that Van Gogh would have been looking in a mirror to create the work. That means the ear we’re seeing is actually his right ear, which was still intact. Still, Van Tilborgh argues that Van Gogh would have known that viewers would perceive the ear in the painting as his left ear. The art historian believes that Van Gogh went in with a palette knife after painting the ear and scraped portions of it off in an attempt to bring out his anguish. The story of Van Gogh’s ;Self-Portrait (1889) ;is fascinating not only for lovers of this masterful painter, but for those interested in the complex story of a singular painting. The work is a learning lesson in how art historians’ opinions of artworks can change and evolve over time, leading to different attributions throughout the course of a painting’s life. Currently, ;Self-Portrait (1889) ;is on loan to the Van Gogh Museum and will be part of the exhibition In the Picture, which opens February 21, 2020. h/t: [The Art Newspaper] Related Articles:3,500-Year-Old Stone Carving Discovery May Change Art History as We Know It Modern Technology Reveals a Hidden Painting Underneath Picasso’s ‘The Blue Room’ New Leonardo da Vinci Drawing Is Discovered And It’s Worth $16 Million Unexpected Discovery Reveals a Rare 18th Century Coloring Book for Adults The post Van Gogh Self-Portrait Thought to Be a Fake for Decades Is Now Confirmed as Real appeared first on My Modern Met. via RSSUnify feed https://mymodernmet.com/van-gogh-self-portrait-norway/ Australia’s devastating bushfires have sparked shock and sadness all over the world. The ferocious flames started blazing in September 2019, and have since killed at least 24 people and destroyed more than 18 million acres of land. But perhaps the most tragic fallout from the fires is that a staggering 1 billion animals are estimated to have died. Like many animal lovers, a Massachusetts-based 6-year-old named Owen Colley wanted to find a way to help the remaining bushfire-affected creatures. The young boy and his family came up with the creative idea of making and selling clay koalas, with proceeds going to fire relief efforts. Owen began making the cute clay characters as thank you gifts for his friends and family who donated $50 or more to Wildlife Rescue South Coast, but the simple idea soon turned into a lucrative campaign. The 6-year-old’s parents began a GoFundMe page, with an initial target of $1,000, but it wasn’t long until the goal was surpassed. “When he reached his initial goal of $1,000 and started getting attention from local newspapers, we set an ambitious new goal of $5,000 and initiated this GoFundMe campaign,” say Owen’s parents. “Never in a million years did we expect to be so successful or meet and hear from so many amazing people—you’re the world’s best!” As of writing, Owen and his family have raised over $250,000 for Wildlife Rescue South Coast—and the figure continues to grow. The money will help the organization build shelters for displaced animals and help individuals set up feeding stations on their properties, so animals without homes have somewhere safe to go. Owen and his family have been working hard to sculpt and deliver thousands of clay koalas, and they even hosted a clay koala-making party to get more people involved. “Thank you ALL for helping a little boy do a BIG thing,” say the boy’s parents. “Owen wishes he could send a clay koala to everyone in the world! We are so proud of this little boy and his kind heart.” You can donate to Owen’s Australian Creature Rescue campaign via GoFundMe and keep up to date with his progress on Instagram. 6-year-old Owen Colley has been making clay koalas in a bid to raise funds for animals affected by the Australian bushfires. So far, he’s raised over over $250,000 for Wildlife Rescue South Coast.Owen Colley: Instagram | GoFundMe All images via Owen Colley.Related Articles:Koalas Are “Functionally Extinct” Due to Devastating Australian Bushfires Heroic Dog Helps Save Koalas From Devastating Australian Bushfires How 25 Artists Are Using Their Art to Express Their Sadness Over the Australian Bushfires The Irwin Family Has Treated Thousands of Animals Injured in the Australian Bushfires The post 6-Year-Old Raises Over $250K for Australian Bushfires by Making Cute Clay Koalas appeared first on My Modern Met. via RSSUnify feed https://mymodernmet.com/australian-bushfires-fundraiser-clay-koalas/ Photographer Jan Hoek collaborated with Ugandan-Kenyan fashion designer Bobbin Case on a project focused on the Boda Boda motor taxis roaming Nairobi. The creature, named after the famous soccer player, was rescued by Aleksandr and Mariya Dmitriev in 2016 after living in a petting zoo in Penza, Russia. At the zoo, Messi suffered health problems at just three months old. The institution decided that because pumas were not native to Russia, it wasn’t possible to release Messi into the wild, and his health issues prevented him from living in another zoo or animal sanctuary. They had planned to euthanize him. It was “love at first sight” when Aleksandr and Mariya first saw Messi at the zoo. The couple decided they had to take in the young puma and, after working with the zoo, they were able to take him home. Once there, they began to nurse Messi back to health. He was “weak and demanded a lot of attention,” but ultimately overcame his ailments. Now full-grown, Messi is smaller than the average puma at two-thirds the size. At home, Messi acts like a cross between a dog and a cat. Like a pup, he requires a lot of exercise, and Aleksandr and Mariya take him on walks twice a day. They also go to training classes several times a week, and Messi has learned 10 commands. But when he’s relaxing at home, he loves to climb into boxes, scratch on his post, and lounge with his favorite people. The domesticated puma also enjoys being petted and will gladly play with his humans—without using his claws. Messi has become an internet celebrity over the years. He even has an Instagram account with over one million followers and a popular YouTube channel. Scroll down for some adorable photos of Messi and then follow him on Instagram to see more.
